What's Wrong With the US FAQ

What follows is question and answer pairs to questions which we have received about the website. If this doesn't answer your question, please read the About information. If that doesn't answer it, then please submit your question to us.

Debates

Q: How does the debate system work?

Answer:

Please read the Debate Information page.

Stories/Articles

Q: How does the story-rating work?

Answer:

Stories can be rated by logged in users. Ratins are 1 (bad)... 5 (great). Each story can be rated once by each user. What do we intend to do with these ratings? We don't know yet. Suggest something.

Q: Do you accept pictures

Answer:

Yes. When you submit a picture to us, please choose a section of 'Photos'.

Q: Why do some stories show up in sections, but not on the homepage?

If we have a lot of stories queued to show on the homepage, we can make a story show only in a section (example: politics). This is done to save space, primarily. We can only fit so many stories on the homepage at any given point in time.

Submisions

Q: Who can submit stories/articles

Answer:

Anyone. We prefer you establish an account on the website before you do so. However, that is not required.

Q: How do I know whether something I submit is accepted?

When you submit a story to us, if you are logged in, you have the option to be alerted when your story is accepted or rejected.

Q: Why hasn't my story been accepted or rejected yet?

Probably because we've not gotten to it yet. Maybe because others have submitted something similar and we are trying to figure out which submission's better. Maybe we're out drinking margarita's out by the pool ;)

Q: What makes for a better submission?

A submission that makes us work more, is not a better submission. A submission that is complete with:

  • valid, relavant links
  • in English
  • is spell checked
  • has decent grammer
and is worded such that it'll attract readership is a submission which we would probably deem to be quite good. Such submissions are fast-tracked to the posting priority for the site.
Such submissions take less time for us to process, hence they're easier to post. This increases the odds that a submission will be posted.

Q: How does the submission-rating work?

Answer:

Story submissions can be rated by logged in users. Ratings are 1 (bad)... 5 (great). Each submission can be rated once by each user. Our original intent, when we wrote the code for the submission-rating system, was to have a threshold by which if a submission was rated about that threshold, it would automatically be posted. Or, minimally, site admins would receive a notice saying "hey post this".

We haven't wrote the notification code for it yet. But the ratings do work. When you view the submission bin, you'll see the ratings.
